2016 Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle

The Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 event for novice hurdlers run during the course of the annual Cheltenham Festival at Prestbury Park.

The race is run over a distance of 2 miles 110 yards on the Cheltenham Old Course, and is one of the ‘sprint’ hurdle handicaps of the Cheltenham meeting. Entry is restricted to 4-year-old novices.

The Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle dates back to 2005. The race was added to the Cheltenham Festival card during the meeting’s expansion from a three to four day event, and commemorates the contribution made by legendary trainer, Fred Winter, to national hunt racing.

Novices’ races are unpredictable affairs, and even more so when weights are involved. As a result the winners of this race have been of variable quality and most have faded into anonymity after taking victory at the Cheltenham Festival.
