The Ryanair Chase
The Ryanair Chase is a grade 1 steeplechase run during the Cheltenham Festival. The race is run over a distance of 5 miles and 4 furlongs and features 17 fences. Entry to the Ryanair Chase is restricted to 5-year-old and above racehorses.
The Ryanair Chase was added to the Cheltenham Festival card in 2005 as part of the meeting’s expansion. The race replaced the now defunct novices race, the Cathcart Challenge Cup, and received a grade 1 rating in 2008.
Ryanair Chase Betting & Trends
Age: Racehorse age is not an important factor in the Ryanair Chase. Winners have been aged between 6 and 10 years of age.
Odds: Every winner of the Ryanair Chase has been priced under 6/1 with only one favourite winning in the history of the race.
Jockey: Ruby Walsh has ridden two Ryanair Chase winners.
Trainer: Paul Nicholls has two wins in the Ryanair Chase in the past five years.
Ryanair Chase Tip: Bets on the antepost favourite appears to be a bad option. A better strategy is to bet on a spread of horses priced under 5/1, looking to place each-way or place bets on these selections.
Ryanair Chase Winners
The Ryanair Chase tends to attract racehorses that don’t have the quality to compete in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Nevertheless a number of handicap winners have come into the race and proved their class with impressive victories. 2009 winner Imperial Commander upset highly rated short odds favourite, Voy Por Ustedes, to take the race title following a win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup.
